During this visit, you should work with one or more groups of students if you haven't already, and observe your teacher doing the same. For this journal entry, describe your teacher's teaching style. What type of relationships with students does he or she nurture in his or her classes? How do students perceive that power is distributed in the classes? Does this vary within or across the different classes the teacher has? Cite examples from your observations to support your inferences. Remember to reflect on what style of teaching you will gravitate toward and the how you want to be perceived by your students.
Observations:
During this visit I observed students taking a test at Westerly Middle School. The test was on mass determination and units. The test was practical and allowed the students to get up and move around while demonstrating their hands on abilities with this subject. From what I have witnessed, Ms. T has a very well balanced relationships with the students and has a teaching style that I believe reflects my own. I do not see Ms. T as nuturing her students, however this does not mean that she does not show that she respects the students. She does treat them as individuals, and mature students. This practical test demonstrates some of Ms. T's personal teaching style. She wants the students to know the material and demonstrate it, and does not offend their intellegence by asking them to memorize trivial information. She directs the class as a whole, but when an individual student has an issue or concern, she focuses on that individual and shows knowledge interest in their lives.
Reflections:
I would see myself modeling this type of teaching style in terms of relationships with students. Ms. T shows that if a teacher treats the class with respect, they will give it in return. My goal for having a strong relationships with my class is to have the students know that I care about them each individually as students and learning young adults, and that I see them as a cooperative unit (class) as well and expect us to work together. I think to gain this respect I would need to maintain proper authority in the class, but not forget about students needs to socialize and their needs to be individuals. Even though I would hope for the most success for each students, I will need to be aware of the fact that each student has a different lifestyle, and has different learning styles, and cater to their specific needs.
